All Details
I am the Papaya Red Lady (Taiwan 786), the prolific crimson-heart dwarf. My compact, sturdy, and fast-growing single stem is crowned with a canopy of dark green, deeply lobed leaves. I bear heavy clusters of medium-sized, oblong fruits with smooth green skin that ripens to a brilliant golden-yellow, revealing stunning, deep red, sweet, and firm flesh with a small seed cavity—a true powerhouse of production in a small space.
I am a superior gynoecious (primarily female) hybrid variety of papaya (Carica papaya), famous for its dwarf stature, early and heavy fruiting, and exceptional fruit quality. I am the quintessential choice for home gardens and high-density commercial cultivation.
A hybrid developed in Taiwan, selected for tropical and subtropical adaptation. Now one of the most widely planted and successful papaya varieties worldwide, especially in Asia.
Requires consistent, even moisture. Water regularly, especially during hot, dry periods and fruit development. Good drainage is essential to prevent root and stem rot. Drip irrigation is ideal.
Demands full sun (6-8 hours minimum) for vigorous growth, strong stem development, and high sugar content in the fruit.
Thrives in warm, frost-free climates (21-33°C). Growth is optimal in consistent heat. Chilling and frost are fatal.
Plant in very well-drained, fertile soil amended with organic matter. Due to its dwarf habit, it can be planted densely (1.5-2m apart). Excellent for large containers and small gardens.
Is a heavy feeder. Apply a balanced fertilizer regularly (every 4-6 weeks). Increase potassium as flowering begins. Calcium supplementation is crucial to prevent blossom-end rot.
Botanical name: Carica papaya 'Red Lady 786'; Common names: Red Lady Papaya, Taiwan 786, Hybrid Red Papaya; Family: Caricaceae.
The ripe fruit flesh is non-toxic. However, unripe fruit, seeds, leaves, and stems contain papain and alkaloids that can be harmful in large quantities, potentially causing stomach upset. The sap is an irritant.
Moderate. As a fast-growing, large-leaved plant, it contributes to oxygen production and has a refreshing tropical appearance.
Extremely high yield on a dwarf plant; fruits have excellent shelf life, sweetness, and eye-catching red flesh; begins fruiting just 6-8 months after planting; gynoecious trait ensures a high percentage of fruit-setting flowers without needing a male pollinator nearby.
Very susceptible to papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) and root-knot nematodes. Can suffer from powdery mildew and fruit fly infestation. Overwatering leads to phytophthora root and stem rot.
Short-lived perennial. Typically remains highly productive for 2-3 years. After this, yield declines, and trees are often replaced. Grows 1.5-2.5 meters tall.
