Hello! I am the Mosambi Tree, commonly known as the Sweet Lime, a prolific evergreen citrus tree cherished for my smooth, pale orange fruit and my mild, sweet, non-acidic juice. I am a symbol of subtle sweetness, hydration, and enduring freshness, highly valued across subtropical regions for my versatile and palatable fruit. I am here to bring reliable bounty and fragrant calm to your warm garden.
I am a medium-sized, evergreen tree or shrub with a dense, spreading crown and irregular branching. I am prized globally for my exceptionally sweet fruit that uniquely lacks the intense acidity of true lemons or limes, though many cultivars possess sharp thorns on the twigs.
My highly glossy, deep green leaves are oval-shaped and aromatic when crushed, bearing the characteristic scent of mild citrus. My small, pure white flowers are intensely fragrant and usually bloom profusely multiple times a year, filling the air with a beautiful scent.
My fruit is medium-sized, round, and ripens to a light yellow or pale orange with smooth, thin skin. The interior pulp is light yellow, juicy, and distinctively sweet with a very low acid content.
I am believed to have originated in the Indo-Malayan region, potentially in Southeast Asia or the Indian subcontinent, and have been widely cultivated across the Mediterranean and the Americas.
Like all citrus, I require a consistent watering schedule and absolutely demand excellent drainage.
Routine: Water me deeply and regularly, ensuring the soil remains evenly moist but never saturated, particularly during flowering and fruiting cycles.
Tolerance: I am very susceptible to root rot in heavy, compacted, waterlogged soil. Allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings is crucial.
I am a sun-loving fruit tree that requires maximum light for a robust structure and high fruit yield.
Preference: I need full sun exposure (at least 6-8 hours of direct light daily). Abundant sunlight is vital for strong growth and for producing the maximum amount of sweet, juicy fruit.
Tolerance: Insufficient light will lead to sparse fruiting, slower growth, and a less vigorous canopy.
I am a subtropical tree, thriving in warm, mild conditions, but I am more sensitive to cold than some other citrus types.
I enjoy average temperatures between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F) during the growing season.
Cold Sensitivity: I am moderately sensitive to cold. I will be severely damaged or killed by temperatures sustained below -1°C (30°F). I am best suited for USDA Zones 9-11, and container plants must be moved indoors before the first hard frost.
I am suitable for sunny landscapes, patios, or home orchards in warm regions.
Space Requirement: I am a medium tree, typically 15 to 25 feet tall. Plant me with adequate space to accommodate my spreading crown, away from structures.
Soil: I require well-drained, fertile, loamy soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0 to 7.0).
I am a heavy feeder, especially of nitrogen and critical micronutrients, to support my continuous fruiting habit.
Routine: Fertilize frequently (every 1-2 months during the growing season) using a specialized citrus fertilizer high in Nitrogen and supplemented with necessary micronutrients like iron, zinc, and magnesium to prevent common deficiencies (chlorosis).
Scientific Name: Citrus limetta
Common Names: Mosambi, Sweet Lime, Sweet Limetta, Mediterranean Sweet Lemon
Plant Family: Rutaceae (Citrus family)
Plant Type: Medium, Evergreen Fruit Tree
The Mosambi (Sweet Lime) Tree (Citrus limetta) is considered TOXIC to pets due to the concentration of essential oils (Limonene and Linalool) and psoralens found in the peel, leaves, and seeds; ingestion of these parts, especially by dogs and cats, can cause symptoms ranging from vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and tremors, making it safest to prevent consumption of any part of the tree.
As a dense, evergreen citrus tree, I perform consistent, year-round air purification by sequestering Carbon Dioxide. My highly fragrant flowers and leaves release beneficial aromatic oils into the atmosphere, contributing positively to air quality in my immediate vicinity.
Sweet, Mild Juice: My fruit provides a unique, sweet, non-acidic juice ideal for beverages.
Aromatic: My prolific white flowers fill the air with an exquisite fragrance.
Continuous Fruiting: I often produce flowers and fruit simultaneously, providing visual and edible interest year-round.
Pests: Highly susceptible to common citrus pests like Scale, Spider Mites, Citrus Leaf Miner, and Aphids.
Nutrient Deficiencies: Prone to chlorosis (yellowing leaves) if micronutrients are lacking.
Disease: Vulnerable to citrus-specific fungal and bacterial diseases.
I am a very long-lived fruit tree. With proper care and protection from severe cold, I can remain productive for 50 to over 100 years.
