All Details

I am the Poinsettia, the floral emblem of winter cheer. My bold, fiery red "flowers" are actually radiant leaf bracts that crown my green foliage, creating a stunning contrast that illuminates homes and festivities during the holiday season.

I am a tropical perennial shrub, but most famously grown as a seasonal indoor potted plant. I am prized for my photoperiodic nature, where specific light conditions trigger my iconic color change.

Native to the deciduous tropical forests of Mexico and Central America. Named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.

Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. Ensure excellent drainage and never let the plant sit in standing water, as this leads to root rot. Avoid wetting the foliage and bracts.

Prefers bright, indirect light (at least 6 hours daily). To re-bloom and color bracts, requires 14+ hours of complete darkness each night for 6-8 weeks.

Thrives in 18-24°C; is extremely sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 13°C, which cause rapid leaf drop.

Use a light, well-draining potting mix. When grown outdoors in frost-free climates, plant in sheltered, partially shaded locations.

Feed every 3-4 weeks with a balanced, all-purpose liquid fertilizer during the active growth period (spring-summer). Stop fertilizing during the blooming/colored bract period.

Botanical name: Euphorbia pulcherrima; Common names: Poinsettia, Christmas Star, Noche Buena, Flores de Pascua; Family: Euphorbiaceae.

⚠️ CAUTION: Mildly toxic to cats and dogs. The milky sap (latex) can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach, leading to vomiting or drooling.

Low; primarily a decorative seasonal plant with minimal documented impact on indoor air quality.

The world's most popular holiday plant, symbolizing joy and celebration; used extensively in festive décor; can be maintained as a green perennial shrub year-round with proper care.

Leaf drop due to sudden temperature changes, drafts, or improper watering; whitefly and mealybug infestations; root rot; failure to re-bloom (re-color) due to incorrect light/dark cycles.

As a seasonal pot plant, it is often treated as an annual. However, with meticulous care, it can live for many years as a woody shrub, reaching 2-4 meters in its native habitat.
