I am Mogra Desi, the soulful fragrance of the everyday garden. My simple, elegant single-petaled white flowers and deep green leaves release a powerful, nostalgic perfume that defines summer evenings and homegrown happiness across India.
I am the classic, hardy, evergreen flowering shrub, the original 'Desi' (local/heirloom) variety of Jasmine, cherished for its potent fragrance, resilience, and prolific seasonal blooming.
Indigenous to tropical Asia; the 'Desi' variety is the traditional, most common form found in home gardens and temples across the Indian subcontinent.
Water regularly to keep soil moist during the growing season; allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings in winter.
Requires full sun to partial shade (minimum 4-6 hours of direct sunlight) for optimal flowering.
Thrives in 20-32°C; sensitive to frost.
Plant in well-drained, fertile garden soil; space 1-1.5 meters apart for a loose hedge or standalone shrub.
Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced organic fertilizer or compost to encourage healthy blooms.
Botanical name: Jasminum sambac (Grand Duke of Tuscany is a double form, but 'Desi' often refers to the single or less complex cultivars); Family: Oleaceae.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though excessive ingestion is not advised.
Moderate; improves the sensory and ambient air quality with its natural fragrance.
Provides intensely fragrant flowers for daily puja, garlands, and hair adornments; a resilient, low-maintenance plant perfect for traditional gardens; attracts pollinators.
Can be affected by aphids, mealybugs, and whiteflies; leaf yellowing due to nutrient deficiency or water stress; sooty mold from pest excretions.
Long-lived perennial; can thrive for 15-20+ years with basic care, growing 1.5-2 meters tall if unpruned.
