I am Red Chandan, the crimson heartwood tree. My timber glows with a rich red hue, treasured for art, medicine, and heritage. I thrive in dry tropical climates, offering farmers a long-term investment and artisans a rare material.

I am a rare timber tree producing deep red heartwood.

Native to southern India, especially Andhra Pradesh.

Moderately drought-tolerant; water weekly when young.

Requires full sun.

Thrives in 20–35°C; tolerates dry climates.

Plant in red sandy-loam soil; spacing 6–8 meters apart.

Minimal; compost annually for young trees.

Botanical name: Pterocarpus santalinus; Family: Fabaceae.

Non-toxic; not used as fodder.

Moderate; canopy reduces dust.

Provides premium timber, medicinal extracts, and natural dye.

Susceptible to root rot in waterlogged soils; pests include borers and termites.

Can live 60–100 years; harvestable timber in 20–25 years.
