Hello, dreamer of lavender skies! I am the Jacaranda, your breathtaking and majestic tree, celebrated for my spectacular clouds of fragrant, violet-blue flowers that transform landscapes into a scene from a fairy tale. When I bloom, I paint the world in shades of purple, creating a carpet of fallen flowers beneath my canopy. I'm here to bring awe-inspiring beauty and a touch of magic to your garden!
I am a large, deciduous to semi-evergreen tree with a broad, spreading, umbrella-like canopy of delicate, fern-like, compound leaves.
My most magnificent feature is my profusion of trumpet-shaped, lavender-blue flowers that appear in dense clusters (panicles) during spring and early summer.
My foliage is elegant and airy, providing dappled shade. The leaves often drop briefly before the flowers emerge, making the bloom display even more dramatic.
I produce flat, woody, disc-like seed pods that persist on the tree after the flowers are gone.
I am native to the tropical and subtropical regions of South America, particularly Brazil and Argentina.
I am moderately drought-tolerant once established.
Young trees need regular, deep watering to develop a strong root system.
Mature trees benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells, especially before the flowering season.
I do not like constantly wet, waterlogged soil.
I am a full sun worshipper!
I require direct, unfiltered sunlight for most of the day to grow strong and produce my legendary floral display.
I will not flower well in shaded conditions.
I thrive in warm, frost-free climates (USDA zones 9-11).
I love heat and can tolerate high summer temperatures.
I am sensitive to frost, especially when young. Mature trees can withstand a very light frost, but it may damage the outer branches.
Choose a spacious, sunny location where my wide canopy and surface roots have plenty of room to spread. Do not plant me near structures, pavements, or pools.
I am a classic street tree and a magnificent focal point in large parks and gardens.
Be aware that my falling flowers, leaves, and seed pods can create litter, so I am not ideal for patios or areas where neatness is a priority.
The best time to plant me is in the spring or early summer.
I am not a heavy feeder. A balanced, slow-release tree fertilizer applied in early spring can support growth and flowering.
Young trees benefit from more frequent feeding (2-3 times per year) than mature trees.
Over-fertilizing can lead to excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
Scientific Name: Jacaranda mimosifolia
Common Names: Blue Jacaranda, Black Poui, Fern Tree
Plant Family: Bignoniaceae
Plant Type: Large deciduous flowering tree
NON-TOXIC. According to the ASPCA, I am not listed as toxic to cats, dogs, or horses. My flowers, leaves, and seeds are considered safe.
As a large, leafy tree, I am excellent at absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. My broad canopy also helps filter dust and pollutants from the air.
Provides an unforgettable, spectacular floral display that is iconic in many parts of the world.
Offers a beautiful, dappled shade during the summer months.
Fast-growing, providing a significant impact in a relatively short time.
Attracts pollinators like bees and hummingbirds.
Messy - My flowers, leaves, and seed pods can create significant litter.
Surface Roots - My roots can sometimes grow close to the surface and may interfere with lawns or pavement.
Aphids - These pests can infest new growth, secreting honeydew that leads to sooty mold.
Weak Wood - Branches can be susceptible to breakage in strong winds.
Lack of Flowers - Can be caused by insufficient sun, overly rich soil, or a tree that is still too young.
I am a relatively fast-growing tree with a moderate lifespan. Under ideal conditions, I can live for 50 to 70 years, sometimes even longer. I will begin to flower within 5-7 years of planting, and each spring, I will put on a show that becomes more breathtaking as I mature, creating a lifetime of memories under my lavender boughs.
