I am a tropical evergreen tree, valued for my delicious and nutritious nuts known as Kaju (Cashew). I have a spreading canopy, leathery green leaves, and produce unique fruits where the nut grows outside a juicy, apple-like structure called the cashew apple. I am both a commercial crop and a beautiful shade-giving tree.
I am a tropical evergreen tree producing cashew nuts and cashew apples. My canopy spreads wide, making me both an economic crop and a shade provider in coastal regions.
Native to northeastern Brazil, I was introduced to India by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Today, India is one of the largest producers of cashew nuts globally.
I require moderate watering during establishment. Once mature, I thrive in areas with seasonal rainfall and tolerate dry spells due to my deep root system.
I grow best in full sun, where my canopy can expand widely and fruiting is maximized. Shade reduces nut yield and slows growth.
I flourish in warm climates between 24–35°C. I am highly tolerant of heat but sensitive to frost, making me ideal for tropical and coastal zones.
Plant me in sandy or lateritic well-drained soil with spacing of 8–10 meters. I am commonly grown in orchards, coastal belts, and agroforestry systems.
I respond well to organic compost and NPK fertilizer during fruiting years. Fertilization improves nut yield and apple quality.
Botanical name: Anacardium occidentale. Family: Anacardiaceae. My nut is technically a seed attached to the cashew apple.
Cashew nuts are safe for humans when roasted, but raw cashew shells contain urushiol (toxic oil) that can irritate skin and pets.
Moderate; my large canopy helps trap dust and improve microclimates in orchards and villages.
I provide cashew nuts, cashew apples (used for juice, wine, and liquor), timber, and shade. My economic value supports farmers and industries.
I am susceptible to tea mosquito bugs, stem borers, and fungal diseases like anthracnose. Proper orchard management reduces losses.
I can live 30–40 years, with peak nut production between 10–25 years. My canopy expands with age, making me both a productive and ornamental tree.
