I am a tall, hardy, and majestic palm tree, valued for my sweet and nutritious fruits known as Khajur (Dates). I have a strong trunk with a crown of long, feathery leaves and produce hanging clusters of oval fruits that ripen from green to golden brown. I am well known for my strength, longevity, and desert-like resilience.
I am a tall, evergreen palm tree producing clusters of sweet dates. My fruits are highly nutritious, rich in natural sugars, and valued both fresh and dried.
Native to the Middle East and North Africa, I have been cultivated for thousands of years. In India, I am grown in arid regions like Rajasthan and Gujarat.
I require moderate watering during establishment. Once mature, I thrive in dry climates with deep roots tapping groundwater, though irrigation improves fruit yield.
I flourish in full sun, which ensures healthy fronds and abundant fruiting. Shade reduces my productivity.
I grow best in hot climates between 25–40°C. I am highly drought-tolerant but sensitive to frost, making me ideal for desert and semi-arid zones.
Plant me in sandy or loamy well-drained soil with spacing of 8–10 meters. I am often grown in orchards or as avenue palms in dry regions.
I respond well to organic manure and balanced NPK fertilizer during fruiting years. Fertilization enhances fruit size and sweetness.
Botanical name: Phoenix dactylifera. Family: Arecaceae. I am dioecious, meaning male and female trees are separate, requiring pollination for fruiting.
Dates are safe for humans and pets in moderation, but my seeds are hard and should not be chewed.
Moderate; my large fronds trap dust and provide shade, improving microclimates in desert regions.
I provide edible dates, shade, and cultural value. My fruits are rich in energy, fiber, and minerals, while my leaves and trunk are used for handicrafts and shelter.
I am susceptible to pests like red palm weevil and fungal diseases. Proper orchard management and pollination practices are essential.
I can live 80–100 years, producing fruits for decades once mature. My productivity peaks between 30–50 years of age.
