I am a fragrant and valuable climbing vine, admired for my glossy green leaves and clusters of small round fruits that turn into Kali Miri (Black Pepper) when dried. Known as the “King of Spices,” I grow as a woody climber and bring both greenery and spice to gardens and farms.
I am a perennial climbing vine widely cultivated for my aromatic, pungent fruits known as peppercorns, used as a popular spice worldwide.
I am native to the tropical rainforests of South India, especially Kerala, and have been cultivated for thousands of years in tropical regions across Asia.
I prefer consistently moist but well-drained soil. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging.
I thrive in partial shade to filtered sunlight. I can tolerate some morning sun but need protection from harsh afternoon rays.
I grow best in warm, humid climates between 20°C to 35°C. I am sensitive to cold and frost below 15°C.
Plant me in rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Provide a trellis, pole, or tree for support as I am a climbing vine.
I respond well to organic compost and balanced fertilizer applied every 2–3 months during the growing season.
Botanical name: Piper nigrum. Family: Piperaceae. My dried fruits are called black, white, or green peppercorns depending on processing.
Peppercorns in large quantities can cause digestive upset in pets. It's best to keep spices out of their reach.
Low; I am mainly grown for spice production and do not have significant indoor air-purifying properties.
I provide the widely used black pepper spice, which adds flavor to food and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
I am susceptible to root rot from overwatering, and pests like aphids, mites, and fungal diseases in humid conditions.
I can live and produce peppercorns for 12–20 years or more with proper care and support.
