I am a fragrant and premium rice plant, admired worldwide for my long, slender grains and rich aroma. Commonly known as Basmati, I grow as a graceful grass-like crop with narrow green leaves and drooping grain-filled panicles. When cooked, my grains elongate beautifully and release a distinctive fragrance that makes me special among rice varieties.
I am an aromatic, long-grain rice plant known for my distinctive fragrance, delicate texture, and elongated grains that elongate further upon cooking.
I am native to the Indian subcontinent, specifically grown in the foothills of the Himalayas in India and Pakistan, and require specific climatic conditions to develop my signature aroma.
I require consistent flooding or standing water during most of my growth period, especially from planting until grain filling, with well-drained fields before harvest.
I thrive in full sun and require plenty of sunlight during the growing season to develop strong grains and maximize aroma.
I grow best in warm to hot climates with temperatures between 25°C to 35°C during growth, and cooler temperatures during ripening enhance aroma.
Plant me in fertile, well-leveled, clay-loam soil with good water retention. Seeds are first sown in nurseries and transplanted to flooded fields.
I respond well to nitrogen-rich fertilizers applied in split doses, along with organic compost, to support growth and grain quality.
Botanical name: Oryza sativa (variety Basmati). Family: Poaceae. I am known for my high content of aroma compound 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline.
Cooked rice is safe for pets in moderation, but raw rice is hard to digest. Ensure plain cooked rice without spices or additives if shared.
Low; as a crop plant grown in fields, I do not have notable indoor air purification properties, but I help maintain agricultural ecosystems.
I provide the highly prized Basmati rice used in gourmet cooking, known for its aroma, non-sticky texture, and economic value for farmers.
I am susceptible to blast disease, bacterial leaf blight, stem borers, and requires careful water management to avoid lodging or yield loss.
I am an annual crop, completing my life cycle in about 120–150 days from sowing to harvest, depending on the variety and season.
