I am a vibrant tropical shrub known for my striking, colorful foliage that resembles fluffy, dangling catkins or brightly colored leaves in shades of red, copper, pink, or green. Often called "Chenille Plant" or "Copperleaf," I add a unique texture and bold color to gardens and indoor spaces, prized more for my eye-catching leaves and flower spikes than for traditional blooms.
Native to tropical regions of the Americas, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Asia, I thrive in warm, humid climates and have been widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical gardens worldwide.
I prefer consistently moist but well-drained soil. Water me regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging. Let the top inch of soil dry slightly between waterings. I enjoy humidity and benefit from occasional misting.
I thrive in bright, indirect light or partial sun. Too much direct sunlight can scorch my leaves, while too little light may cause colors to fade and growth to become leggy. A spot with morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal.
I flourish in warm temperatures between 20°C to 30°C. I am sensitive to cold and frost, and temperatures below 15°C can damage my foliage. In cooler climates, I am often grown indoors or as a seasonal outdoor plant.
Plant me in rich, well-draining soil mixed with organic compost. Space plants about 60–90 cm apart to allow for bushy growth. I can be grown in garden beds, containers, or as a striking indoor potted plant in bright rooms.
Feed me every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. For more intense leaf color, use a fertilizer slightly higher in nitrogen, but avoid overfeeding to prevent weak growth.
Botanical name: Acalypha spp. (common species include Acalypha hispida (Chenille Plant) and Acalypha wilkesiana (Copperleaf)). Family: Euphorbiaceae. My colorful "flowers" are actually long, hanging inflorescences (catkins) that add to my ornamental appeal.
Mildly toxic to pets if ingested. Like many plants in the Euphorbiaceae family, I contain compounds that may cause vomiting, drooling, or mild skin irritation in cats and dogs. Keep me out of their reach.
Moderate. While not a top air-purifying plant, I contribute to improving indoor air quality by absorbing pollutants and adding humidity through transpiration.
I provide bold, long-lasting color and unique texture to gardens, borders, and indoor displays. I attract pollinators like butterflies when grown outdoors. I am also relatively low-maintenance and can be pruned to maintain shape.
Susceptible to spider mites, aphids, and whiteflies, especially indoors. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf drop. Fading leaf color often indicates too little light.
In tropical climates, I can live as a perennial shrub for several years. In cooler regions, I am often grown as an annual or kept indoors during winter. With proper care, I can thrive for 3–5 years or longer in containers.
