I am a delicate, charming flowering plant celebrated for my dainty, heart-shaped blossoms in soft shades of pink, white, or lavender, often symbolizing young love, affection, and tender memories. My blooms are small but abundant, creating a carpet of color that evokes feelings of romance and nostalgia. I am a favorite in cottage gardens, borders, and sentimental gift plantings.

Native to Europe and temperate regions of Asia, I have been beloved in gardens for centuries and am often associated with folklore and romantic poetry. I am widely cultivated in temperate climates worldwide and have become a symbolic gift between loved ones.
I prefer consistently moist, well-drained soil. Water me regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. I am sensitive to both drought and overwatering.
I thrive in partial shade to filtered sunlight. I can tolerate morning sun but need protection from intense afternoon heat. In cooler climates, I can handle more sun; in warmer regions, I prefer shade during the hottest part of the day.
I flourish in cool to moderate temperatures, ideally between 10°C to 24°C. I am not heat-tolerant and may wilt or stop blooming in extreme summer heat. In warm climates, I am often grown as a cool-season annual.
Plant me in rich, organic, well-draining soil. Space plants about 15–20 cm apart to allow for spreading and a lush, full appearance. I am perfect for garden edges, containers, hanging baskets, and window boxes.
Feed me lightly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to more foliage and fewer flowers.
While “First Love” is a common sentimental name rather than a botanical term, it often refers to plants like Dicentra spectabilis (Bleeding Heart) or certain varieties of Viola or Primula that symbolize early romance. Family: Papaveraceae (if Bleeding Heart) or Violaceae (if Viola).
Mildly toxic if ingested. Some “First Love” symbolic plants contain alkaloids that can cause vomiting or diarrhea in pets. It’s safest to keep me out of reach of cats and dogs.
Low. While I contribute to outdoor beauty and ecosystem health, I am not known as a strong indoor air purifier. My value is primarily ornamental and emotional.
I add delicate beauty and sentimental value to gardens and gifts. I attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. I am often used in floral arrangements, wedding bouquets, and as a symbol of affection and new beginnings.
Susceptible to slugs, snails, and aphids. Fungal issues like powdery mildew can occur in humid conditions with poor air circulation. Browning leaves or lack of blooms may result from too much sun, heat stress, or poor soil nutrition.
Often grown as an annual or short-lived perennial. In ideal conditions, I may last 2–3 years, blooming profusely in spring and sometimes again in fall if temperatures are mild.
