Native to the foothills of the Himalayas and tropical regions of Asia, including India, China, and Iran. I have been cultivated for centuries and hold deep cultural and religious importance, especially in South Asia, where I am used in weddings, festivals, and temple offerings.
I prefer consistently moist, well-drained soil. Water me regularly during the growing season, allowing the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter. Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot.
I thrive in bright, indirect light to partial shade. I can tolerate morning sun but need protection from harsh afternoon sunlight, which can scorch my leaves and flowers. I bloom best with at least 4–6 hours of filtered sunlight daily.
I flourish in warm, humid climates, with temperatures between 18°C to 30°C. I am sensitive to frost and temperatures below 10°C. In colder regions, I can be grown in pots and brought indoors during winter.
Plant me in rich, well-draining soil enriched with organic compost. If growing as a climber, provide a trellis, fence, or support for me to twine around. Space plants 1–2 meters apart to allow for spreading growth.
Feed me every 3–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. A phosphorus-rich fertilizer in spring can promote flowering. Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to excessive foliage and fewer blooms.
Botanical name: Jasminum officinale. Family: Oleaceae. I am also known as "Common Jasmine" or "Summer Jasmine." My flowers are used to produce jasmine essential oil, and my buds are often used to scent jasmine tea.
Generally non-toxic to pets. However, ingestion of large quantities may cause mild digestive discomfort in some animals. It's best to discourage pets from chewing on any plant material.
Moderate. I help improve indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. My natural fragrance also contributes to a calming and refreshing atmosphere.
I am widely grown for my enchanting fragrance, which is known to reduce stress and promote relaxation. I attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. My flowers are used in perfumery, aromatherapy, teas, garlands, and religious rituals.
Susceptible to aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites, especially in dry indoor conditions. Yellowing leaves may be due to overwatering, poor drainage, or nutrient deficiency. Lack of blooms can result from insufficient light or improper pruning.
With proper care, I can live for 15–20 years or more. I am a perennial vine or shrub that blooms from late spring through summer, with some varieties flowering repeatedly under ideal conditions.
