I’m a tropical fruit tree with crisp, juicy, star-shaped fruits that are sweet-tart and refreshing.
I am a small, slow-growing, evergreen tree with a short trunk and a broad, rounded canopy of delicate, compound leaves that close up at night.
My most distinctive feature is my waxy, yellow fruit with five prominent ribs (sometimes 4-6). When sliced crosswise, each piece forms a perfect star!
I produce small, clusters of pink to lavender flowers that are often hidden within the foliage.
I can bear fruit multiple times per year in truly tropical conditions.
I am native to Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Moluccas, but have been cherished in India for centuries.
I prefer consistently moist soil, especially during flowering and fruiting.
Water me deeply 2-3 times a week during dry periods. I am somewhat drought-tolerant but will drop flowers and fruit if stressed.
I cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions, so good drainage is a must.
Young trees need more frequent watering to establish well.
I am a full sun enthusiast!
I need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for the sweetest fruit and best growth.
I will not fruit well in the shade.
I am a true tropical tree and thrive in warm, humid, frost-free climates (USDA zones 10-12).
I love temperatures between 20°C and 35°C.
I am very sensitive to cold and frost, which can cause severe leaf drop and branch dieback.
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with rich, well-draining soil.
I am perfect for small gardens and can also be grown in large containers.
Due to my relatively small size, I fit well in urban and suburban landscapes.
Protect me from strong winds, which can damage my delicate branches and leaves.
I am a moderate feeder. Feed me 3-4 times a year with a balanced fertilizer.
I benefit from extra micronutrients, especially zinc and iron, to prevent leaf chlorosis (yellowing).
Compost or well-rotted manure applied around the base each spring will keep me happy and productive.

CAUTION FOR PETS WITH KIDNEY ISSUES. I contain oxalic acid and caramboxin. While generally safe in small amounts for healthy pets, I can be toxic to those with kidney problems, causing serious illness. It's best to keep the fruit out of reach.
As a leafy evergreen tree, I contribute to cleaner air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
Produces unique, visually stunning fruits that are rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants.
The fruit is versatile—eaten fresh, used in juices, chutneys, or as a garnish.
An attractive, ornamental tree for year-round interest.
Relatively small size makes me suitable for many garden spaces.
Fruit Fly - The primary pest for ripening fruits.
Algal Leaf Spot - Causes rust-colored spots on leaves.
Root Rot - From overwatering or poor drainage.
Fruit Drop - Can be caused by drought, water stress, or nutrient imbalance.
Bird Damage - Birds may peck at ripe fruits.
I am a long-lived tree! In the right tropical conditions, I can thrive and produce fruit for 30-40 years or more. I may take 2-4 years to start fruiting from a young tree, but I will reward your patience with multiple harvests of my starry, refreshing fruits each year.
