Hello, seeker of vibrant foliage! I am the Brazilian Wood Plant, your dazzling and colorful showstopper, celebrated for my intensely pink, lance-shaped leaves with striking green edges. I am a tender perennial that brings a permanent splash of neon color to shaded gardens and containers, creating a tropical feel even in temperate climates. My vibrant appearance makes me a popular choice for adding a "wow" factor to any plant collection.
I am a tender, evergreen perennial sub-shrub, prized for its vibrant, colorful foliage rather than its flowers. My most spectacular feature is my foliage. My leaves are lance-shaped and feature a brilliant, almost fluorescent pink center with a crisp, dark green margin. New growth is often entirely hot pink.I have an upright, clumping growth habit and can be pinched back to encourage a bushier, more compact form.I may produce small, white or purple flowers, but they are insignificant and often removed to encourage more vibrant leaf growth.I am also commonly known as Brazilian Red Hot Alternanthera.
I am native to the tropical regions of Brazil.
I have Moderate to High water needs. I prefer consistently moist, but not waterlogged, soil.Water me regularly when the top inch of soil feels dry. I will wilt dramatically if I get too thirsty.I enjoy high humidity and appreciate misting or a pebble tray, especially when grown indoors.
I am a lover of Partial Shade to Full Sun. The key to my most vibrant color is bright light. In cooler climates, I can handle more direct sun. In hot climates, I need protection from harsh afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch.Too much shade will cause my colors to fade to a dull green and pink.
I am a true tropical plant and thrive in warm, frost-free conditions (USDA zones 10-11).I prefer temperatures between 18°C and 29°C and am extremely sensitive to cold. Any frost will damage or kill me.
I am perfect for adding long-lasting color to shaded beds, borders, and containers. I make an excellent "thriller" or "filler" in mixed pots.Use a rich, well-draining potting mix with plenty of organic matter. In non-tropical climates, I am best grown as an annual or brought indoors before the first frost as a houseplant.Pinch back the growing tips regularly to maintain a dense, bushy shape and prevent me from becoming leggy.
I am a moderate feeder. Feed me every 2-4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.Consistent feeding supports the production of my vibrant, colorful leaves.Reduce or stop fertilizing in the winter when growth slows.
Scientific Name: Alternanthera brasiliana 'Rubiginosa' or similar cultivars.Common Names: Brazilian Wood Plant, Brazilian Red Hot, Joseph's Coat, Calico PlantPlant Family: AmaranthaceaePlant Type: Tender perennial, often grown as an annual
Information Incomplete. I am not listed on the major toxic plant databases for cats and dogs. However, as with any non-food plant, it is prudent to prevent pets from consuming large quantities.
While not specifically studied like some top purifiers, my abundant foliage contributes to a healthier environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
Provides stunning, season-long color with minimal flowers required.Thrives in shade where other colorful plants may struggle.Fast-growing, offering quick impact in the garden or container. Can be easily propagated from stem cuttings.
Leaf Scorch - Caused by too much intense, direct sunlight.Faded Color - Result of insufficient light.Spider Mites & Aphids - Can infest the foliage, especially in drier conditions or when stressed.Root Rot - From overwatering or poorly draining soil.Leggy Growth - Occurs in low light or without regular pinching.
In my native tropical habitat, I am a short-lived perennial. In frost-free zones, I can live for several years. However, in most climates, I am grown as a vibrant annual or kept as a houseplant during the winter. My lifespan in a single season is long, providing color from spring until the first frost. I can be easily overwintered indoors or propagated from cuttings to keep my brilliant display going year after year.
