Hello, tropical wanderer! I am the Travellers Palm, your majestic and iconic tropical plant known for my giant, fan-shaped arrangement of leaves that store rainwater for thirsty travelers. Though called a palm, I'm actually related to the bird-of-paradise and banana plants. I bring dramatic structure, tropical grandeur, and a sense of adventure to large gardens, resorts, and landscapes. I'm here to create a living landmark in your green space!

I'm a giant, evergreen plant with enormous, paddle-shaped leaves that are arranged in a perfect east-west fan shape, reaching impressive sizes.
My most distinctive feature is my leaf bases that form natural cups which collect and store rainwater—hence my name as a natural water source for travelers.
I can grow quite tall, with mature plants reaching up to 30 feet or more in ideal conditions.
I produce beautiful white flowers that emerge from boat-shaped bracts, though flowering may take several years.

I am native to Madagascar, but I have been widely planted in tropical regions around the world.

I prefer consistently moist soil, especially when young.
Water me deeply 2-3 times per week during dry periods.
I'm somewhat drought-tolerant once established but will thrive with regular moisture.
I naturally collect and store water in my leaf bases.

I am a sun worshipper!
I need full, direct sunlight for at least 6-8 hours daily for optimal growth.
I can tolerate light shade but may grow slower and produce smaller leaves.

I thrive in warm, tropical climates between 20°C and 35°C.
I'm sensitive to frost and cannot tolerate freezing temperatures.
I'm perfectly suited to coastal and tropical regions of India.

Choose a spacious, open location with plenty of room for my massive size.

Ensure well-draining soil—I'm adaptable to various soil types.

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant me at the same depth.

Water thoroughly after planting and mulch to retain moisture.

I need ample space—plant me at least 10-15 feet from structures.

I look spectacular as a specimen plant or planted in avenues.

Feed me with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring and summer.
A palm-specific fertilizer can also work well for me.
Compost or well-rotted manure applied annually will keep me healthy.

Scientific Name: Ravenala madagascariensis

Common Names: Traveller's Tree, East-West Palm

Plant Family: Strelitziaceae

Plant Type: Outdoor tropical plant

I am generally considered non-toxic, but it's always wise to prevent pets from chewing on any plant material.

As a large leafy plant, I'm excellent at improving air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, while also providing significant shade.

Dramatic architectural form creates an instant tropical atmosphere

Natural water collection in leaf bases (though not recommended for drinking)

Excellent shade provider for large areas

Wind-resistant due to my fan-shaped growth

Becomes a spectacular focal point in any landscape

Leaf split - Natural in windy conditions or from physical damage

Scale insects - Can attach to stems and leaf bases

Root rot - From overwatering or poor drainage

Nutrient deficiency - Shows as yellowing leaves

Wind damage - Young plants may need protection in very exposed sites

I'm a long-lived plant! With proper conditions, I can thrive for 50-100 years or more, growing more magnificent with each passing year. I become a true landmark in any landscape I grace, with my distinctive fan shape making me instantly recognizable.
