Hello, tropical paradise lover! I am the Lipstick Palm, your most flamboyant and exotic palm friend! I'm famous for my stunning, bright red crownshaft that looks like it's been freshly painted with lipstick. With my elegant, arching green fronds emerging from this vibrant red base, I'm here to bring a dramatic touch of the tropics to your space.
I'm a clustering palm known for my spectacular and colorful appearance. My most striking feature is the glossy, red to orange sheath (crownshaft) at the base of my leaves.
I'm a slow-growing statement plant, perfect for creating a stunning focal point in humid conservatories, large indoor atriums, or tropical outdoor landscapes.
I am a rare and endangered palm, originally from the rainforests of Thailand, Malaysia, and Sumatra, where I grow in swampy, lowland areas.
I am a water-loving plant! I need consistently moist to wet soil at all times.
In the wild, I often grow with my roots in water. Water me frequently, 2-3 times a week, and never let my soil dry out. I am one of the few palms that can tolerate, and even prefer, soggy conditions.
I thrive in bright, indirect light or partial shade. I can tolerate some gentle morning sun.
Too much direct, harsh sunlight will scorch my beautiful fronds. If grown indoors, I need the brightest spot you have.
I am a true heat-lover. I thrive in temperatures between 21°C and 32°C.
I am extremely cold-sensitive and will suffer damage if temperatures drop below 10°C. I need a consistently warm, frost-free environment.
Location: Choose a spot where I can show off my height and color, protected from strong winds.
Soil: I need acidic, peat-rich, and very moisture-retentive soil. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and sand is ideal.
Planting: Plant me at the same level I was in my nursery pot. My roots are sensitive, so be gentle.
Watering: Water me deeply immediately after planting and maintain high soil moisture.
Feed me with a slow-release, granular palm fertilizer that contains micronutrients like magnesium and manganese.
Apply it during the growing season (spring and summer) as directed on the package. This will keep my fronds green and my crownshaft vibrant.
Scientific Name: Cyrtostachys renda
Common Names: Lipstick Palm, Sealing Wax Palm, Red Sealing Wax Palm
Plant Family: Arecaceae
Plant Type: Tropical Clustering Palm
According to the plants in the Palm family are generally non-toxic to cats and dogs. I am considered pet-friendly, but it's always best to discourage your pets from chewing on any houseplants.
Like most large-leafed plants, I am excellent at processing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, helping to create a fresher environment. My broad fronds can also help add humidity to the air.
Unmatched Visual Impact: My brilliant red and green coloring is simply breathtaking.
Tropical Ambiance: Instantly creates a resort-like, exotic feel.
Pet-Friendly: Safe to grow around your curious furry family members.
Humidity Lover: Perfect for a bathroom with a skylight or a humid greenhouse.
Brown Leaf Tips: Usually a sign of low humidity, underwatering, or salt/mineral buildup in the soil.
Yellowing Fronds: Can indicate a nutrient deficiency (especially magnesium or potassium) or poor water quality.
Pests: Can be susceptible to spider mites, especially in dry indoor air.
Stunted Growth or Pale Color: Often due to insufficient light, cold temperatures, or incorrect soil pH (I need acidic soil).
I am a long-lived perennial palm. With perfect, warm, and humid tropical conditions, I can live for decades, eventually reaching over 10 meters in height. In containers or less-than-ideal conditions, my growth will be much slower and my lifespan may be shorter, but I will still be a stunning plant for many years.
