All Details

Hello, sleek plant enthusiast! I am the Pencil Palm, your elegant and architectural houseplant known for my slender, upright growth and modern appeal. While I look like a palm, I'm actually a type of succulent related to the Pencil Cactus! I'm here to add vertical interest and contemporary style to your space with my minimal maintenance needs and striking silhouette.

I'm an upright-growing succulent with multiple pencil-thin, green stems that grow vertically in a dense cluster.
My stems are smooth and leafless for most of the year, giving me a clean, architectural appearance.
I may produce small, temporary leaves at the tips of new growth during the growing season.
I'm perfect for adding height to plant arrangements or as a standalone statement piece in modern interiors.

I originate from arid regions of Africa and India.

I'm extremely drought-tolerant.
Water me only when the soil is completely dry—typically every 3-4 weeks in summer.
In winter, water me even less frequently—once a month or less.
I'm very susceptible to root rot, so when in doubt, skip the watering!

I thrive in bright, direct sunlight.
The more sun I get, the better I'll grow and maintain my compact form.
A south or west-facing window is perfect for me indoors.

I prefer warm conditions between 18°C and 30°C.
I cannot handle frost—protect me from temperatures below 10°C.

Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix.

Choose a pot with excellent drainage holes.

Plant me at the same depth as I was in my nursery container.

Water lightly after repotting, then wait 1-2 weeks before watering again.

I prefer being slightly root-bound, so don't repot too often.

Wear gloves when handling me—my sap can be irritating to skin.

I'm a very light feeder. Use a diluted succulent fertilizer once in spring.
No fertilizer is needed for the rest of the year.

Scientific Name: Euphorbia antisyphilitica (also sold as Euphorbia tirucalli types)

Common Names: Pencil Plant, Milk Bush, Candle Plant

Plant Family: Euphorbiaceae

Plant Type: Succulent (indoor/outdoor in warm climates)

Highly toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. My milky sap is irritating to skin and toxic if ingested. Keep me completely out of reach of pets and children!

Like other plants, I help improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, though I'm primarily grown for my unique form.

Clean, architectural look perfect for modern decor

Extremely low maintenance and drought-tolerant

Adds vertical interest without taking up much space

Pest-resistant due to toxic sap

Slow-growing—won't outgrow your space quickly

Root rot - The most common issue, always from overwatering

Stem rot - From water sitting on stems or poor air circulation

Stretching - Not enough light, causing sparse growth

Yellowing stems - Usually a sign of too much water

Sap leakage - From damage; handle carefully with gloves

I'm a long-lived plant! With proper care, I can thrive for 15-20 years or more, maintaining my elegant, pencil-like form and adding timeless beauty to your space.
