Hello! I am the Orange Tree, the most famous and widely cultivated citrus tree in the world, renowned for my beautiful, glossy foliage, my highly fragrant white flowers, and my spherical, bright orange fruit. I am a symbol of warmth, enduring sweetness, and reliable bounty. I offer a constant source of refreshment, Vitamin C, and year-round tropical appeal to your landscape.
I am a medium-sized, evergreen tree with a dense, rounded crown, prized for my long lifespan and ability to bear flowers and fruit simultaneously, often resulting in a mix of blossoms, green fruit, and ripe orange fruit on the branches.
My most distinctive features are my highly glossy, dark green leaves, which are aromatic when crushed, and my pure white, intensely fragrant blossoms (orange blossoms). My fruit is typically spherical, with a thick, aromatic peel, and is valued for its sweet, juicy pulp.
I am a subtropical tree that requires full sun and ample water to fuel my continuous fruiting cycle, making me a heavy feeder. I am globally valued as the source of the world's most popular juice and for the exquisite fragrance of my flowers.
I am native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, likely originating in the area encompassing Southern China, Northeastern India, and Myanmar, before being spread along trade routes.
I require consistent and deep watering to support my dense evergreen canopy and heavy fruit load.
Routine: Water me deeply and regularly, ensuring the soil remains evenly moist but never waterlogged. Irregular watering can lead to fruit splitting and drop.
Tolerance: I demand excellent drainage. Root rot is a common issue in heavy, saturated soil.
I am a sun-loving fruit tree that requires maximum light for energy and high-sugar fruit development.
Preference: I need full sun exposure (at least 6-8 hours of direct light daily). Abundant sunlight is crucial for maximum fruit yield and the sweetest flavor profile.
Tolerance: Insufficient light will reduce flowering, fruit set, and the overall vigor of the tree.
I am a subtropical tree, thriving in warm, mild conditions with cool, but not freezing, winters.
I enjoy average temperatures between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F) during the growing season.
Cold Tolerance: Sweet oranges are generally the most cold-sensitive commercial citrus. Mature, dormant trees can tolerate very brief drops to -4°C (25°F), but sustained freezing temperatures will severely damage the fruit and wood. I am best suited for USDA Zones 9 and warmer, or container growing.
I am suitable for gardens, home orchards, and avenues in warm regions.
Space Requirement: I am a medium tree, typically 15 to 30 feet tall. Plant me with adequate space to accommodate my spreading, rounded crown.
Soil: I require well-drained, fertile, loamy soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0 to 7.0).
I am a heavy feeder, particularly of nitrogen, due to my evergreen foliage and the large amount of fruit I produce annually.
Routine: Fertilize frequently (every 1-3 months during the active growing season) using a specialized citrus fertilizer high in Nitrogen, supplemented with critical micronutrients like Iron, Zinc, and Manganese to prevent common deficiencies.
Scientific Name: Citrus sinensis (Sweet Orange) or Citrus aurantium (Sour/Bitter Orange)
Common Names: Orange, Sweet Orange, Navel Orange, Valencia Orange, Seville Orange
Plant Family: Rutaceae (Citrus family)
Plant Type: Medium, Evergreen Fruit Tree
The Orange Tree (Citrus sinensis) is considered TOXIC to pets due to the concentration of essential oils (Limonene and Linalool) and psoralens found in the peel, leaves, and seeds; ingestion of these parts, especially by dogs and cats, can cause symptoms ranging from vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and tremors, making it safest to prevent consumption of any part of the tree.
As a dense, large, evergreen tree, I perform consistent, year-round air purification by sequestering Carbon Dioxide. My numerous flowers and leaves release high volumes of fragrant essential oils into the atmosphere, which contribute positively to the air quality in my immediate environment.
Culinary Dominance: My sweet juice and pulp are globally essential for nutrition and flavor.
Intense Fragrance: My white orange blossoms are one of the world's most fragrant flowers.
Year-Round Appeal: I provide excellent shade and bear fruit and flowers simultaneously, offering continuous visual interest.
Pests: Highly susceptible to common citrus pests like Scale, Spider Mites, Aphids, and Citrus Leaf Miner.
Nutrient Deficiencies: Prone to chlorosis (yellowing leaves) if micronutrients are lacking.
Disease: Vulnerable to devastating citrus-specific diseases (e.g., citrus greening).
I am a very long-lived fruit tree. With proper care and pest/disease management, I can remain productive for 50 to over 100 years.
