All Details
I am the Snake Lilliput, the miniature fortress of resilience. I form a compact, nest-like rosette of short, stiff, sword-shaped leaves, dramatically patterned with deep green horizontal bands and golden-yellow margins. My stout, dwarf stature holds all the air-purifying power and indestructible spirit of my taller cousins, making me a perfect gem for small spaces.
I am a dwarf cultivar of the Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata, formerly Sansevieria trifasciata). I am prized for my tough, architectural form in a small package, extreme tolerance to neglect, and superb air-purifying abilities, ideal for modern desks, shelves, and terrariums.
Native to tropical West Africa. The dwarf varieties (like 'Hahnii') have been cultivated from the standard Snake Plant to create compact, clumping forms.
Thrives on neglect. Water sparingly only when the soil is completely dry (every 2-4 weeks, less in winter). Overwatering is the only sure way to kill me (causes root rot).
Highly adaptable. Tolerates low light but thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct hot sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light may dull the variegation.
Thrives in average room temperatures (18-27°C). Protects from temperatures below 10°C.
Plant in a very well-draining, sandy cactus or succulent mix. Use a shallow, wide pot as roots are shallow. Perfect for dish gardens, small pots, and office spaces.
Feed lightly, if at all. A half-strength balanced liquid fertilizer once at the beginning of spring and once in summer is more than sufficient.
Botanical name: Dracaena trifasciata 'Hahnii' or similar dwarf cultivar; Common names: Bird's Nest Sansevieria, Dwarf Snake Plant; Family: Asparagaceae.
⚠️ Mildly toxic to cats and dogs. Contains saponins which can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if ingested.
High (especially for its size). Renowned for filtering indoor air toxins like formaldehyde, benzene, and xylene. It is one of the best plants for improving indoor air quality, even at night (releases oxygen).
Nearly indestructible and perfect for beginners; excellent air purifier; adds strong vertical lines and architectural interest to small spaces; requires minimal care and watering.
Root rot from overwatering is the primary issue. Can get mealybugs or spider mites if stressed. Leaves may become soft and mushy if overwatered or too cold.
Very long-lived perennial. Can thrive for decades with minimal care. Grows in a tight clump, typically only 15-25 cm tall.
