I am the Black Rubber Plant, the gothic aristocrat of the indoor jungle. My deep, almost black, glossy burgundy leaves create a dramatic, sophisticated silhouette, bringing a bold and mysterious elegance to contemporary interiors.
I am a stunning, dark-leaved cultivar of the Rubber Plant, celebrated for my nearly black, glossy foliage that adds depth, contrast, and a touch of modern drama as a statement houseplant.
A cultivated variety of Ficus elastica, native to Southeast Asia; selectively bred for its unique dark leaf pigmentation.
Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry. Allow soil to partially dry between waterings. Reduce frequency in winter.
Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain dark leaf color. Tolerates medium light but may grow slower; avoid direct harsh sun which can scorch leaves.
Thrives in average room temperatures (18-26°C); protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
Plant in a well-draining, peat-based potting mix in a container with drainage holes.
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Botanical name: Ficus elastica 'Burgundy' or 'Abidjan'; Common names: Black Prince, Burgundy Rubber Plant; Family: Moraceae.
Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. The milky sap contains compounds that can cause oral irritation, vomiting, and drooling.
High; effective at removing common indoor air pollutants like formaldehyde, similar to other rubber plants.
Provides a striking, architectural focal point with low to moderate care needs; excellent air-purifying qualities; less common than green varieties, offering unique decor appeal.
Leaf drop due to overwatering or sudden environmental changes; susceptible to spider mites and mealybugs in dry conditions; dust can dull the glossy leaves.
Long-lived perennial; can thrive indoors for many years, growing up to 2-3 meters tall with proper care, but is easily pruned to maintain size.
